Not only have social issues like food and housing insecurity, unemployment, racism, mental illness, and precarious workers’ rights been exposed and exacerbated, but the sector that’s best positioned to help — the social sector, has also been stretched and challenged. No one expected millions of social impact workers to work online all at once, and the shift is revealing serious gaps in the development and delivery of programs and services as a result of inadequate technology and data literacy, capacity, and resourcing. An added twist is that a majority of social impact organizations don’t have IT departments to help them with technology selection, implementation, and skills upgrades.
