Canada announces new funds for gender advancement

Global Affairs Canada marked International Women’s Day by committing $193 million to 20 projects that support gender equality worldwide.

Canada will also contribute $10 million to the Equality Fund’s First Response Fund, which aims to help women’s rights organizations provide prompt humanitarian assistance to populations in need.

Supporting gender equality is part of Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy. Canada is a founding donor to the Equality Fund, which supports hundreds of women’s rights organizations globally.

In 2023-24, Canadian aid and development funding for gender and women’s rights helped more than 40 million people.

The announcement comes when humanitarian foreign assistance is being cut, with the Trump administration dismantling the USAID and the UK and Dutch governments reducing aid budgets in recent weeks.
