Freeland leaves cabinet, postal workers back
Well, this was not on my fall economic statement bingo card.
Just before I sent out this newsletter, we once again got breaking news. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has resigned from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, just hours before she was to give the fall economic update.
We’ll see what this means for the tax holiday, the promised $250 cheques and anything else this could mean for the social impact sector today.
Canada Post workers back on the job tomorrow
Canada Post workers will be back on the job on Tuesday after the Canadian Industrial Relations Board ordered them to return to work at 8 a.m. local time on Dec. 17.
While this is good news for non-profits who rely on direct mail for fundraising, especially during the lucrative holiday period, it’s not great for labour relations. Still, Canada Post workers will receive an immediate five per cent wage increase, retroactive to the days the union contracts expired.
The current agreements have been extended until May of 2025.
