Future of Good designated a Qualified Canadian Journalism Organization by the Canada Revenue Agency

I’m excited to share the news that the Canada Revenue Agency has designated Future of Good a Qualified Canadian Journalism Organization (QCJO)—a milestone achievement in our fifth year. 

I never expected a letter from the CRA to deliver such a “pinch me” moment. The news felt surreal. I couldn’t sleep that night. I was wired, excited, and imagining all the possibilities as a result of this designation. It took hundreds of hours of work, but it happened and will be game-changing for Future of Good. 

Being designated a Qualified Canadian Journalism Organization (QCJO) means that Future of Good has gone through rounds of reviews and assessments, including an evaluation by an independent advisory board that looked deeply at our content, whether it’s original, whether it meets journalistic standards and principles, and, most importantly, whether it benefits all Canadians. 

It’s a proud moment for our team. It validates our original journalism, journalistic standards, and the fact that our journalism can benefit Canadians coast to coast to coast—a real first for social purpose and solutions journalism. 

As a QCJO, Future of Good is now listed among giants like The Globe & Mail and Postmedia and smaller independent publications such as The Lethbridge Herald and L’Acadie Nouvelle in New Brunswick.  

Being a QCJO could open the doors to a number of funding opportunities, tax credits, and tax incentives. For example, individual Future of Good members are eligible for the Digital News Subscription Tax Credit, which allows them to claim up to $500 in costs incurred for a subscription to a QCJO within a fiscal year. 

This designation also means Future of Good will register to become a qualified donee. This process is underway, which means we can receive direct funding from philanthropic organizations, accept donations, and issue tax receipts for gifts we receive. 

Future of Good’s focus is to illuminate, analyze, and report on solutions and transformations shaping the social purpose world in the next decade—from AI and DEI to gender justice, social finance, and much more. 

In the short five years that we’ve been around, we’ve published more than 1,500 stories, including delivering in-depth, insightful and nuanced coverage of significant launches such as the Social Finance Fund and the Equality Fund, illuminating promising solutions such as #DataBack and child-lens investing, explaining use cases of fast-growing tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, unpacking progress on the federal government’s work on charitable sector modernization and revamping Global Affairs Canada’s grants and contributions system, and investigating the diversity of investment committees at Canada’s largest community foundations and corporate funding pledges to Black communities

In addition to our written journalism, Future of Good designs and convenes several ground-breaking conferences, including Social Finance Forum, Canada’s most prominent social finance and impact investing conference, the country’s first-ever Changemaker Wellbeing Summit and the Black Leadership in Social Impact Summit in collaboration with the Foundation for Black Communities. This fall, we are releasing “Top 50 Equitable Funders,” our first annual ranking and analysis of Canada’s largest grantmakers, in collaboration with QuakeLab as we embark on producing research and data products.  

This designation is a proud moment for Future of Good and a testament to our team’s passion, commitment, and work.
