Canada ramps up aid for Lebanon

Ottawa announced a further $15 million in aid for Lebanon this week as the Israeli ground invasion and air attacks deepen the humanitarian crisis in the country.

The federal government will also match up to $6 million in donations made to the Canadian Red Cross’ Lebanon Humanitarian Needs Appeal and the Humanitarian Coalition’s Lebanon Emergency Appeal between Sept. 24 to Nov. 3.

The latest round of funding follows an earlier announcement of $10 million in assistance to Lebanon on Sept. 28. These two funding packages are in addition to Canada’s contribution to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund for Lebanon.

Canada’s total humanitarian aid for Lebanon has reached more than $56 million this year alone.

About 1.2 million people are estimated to have been displaced internally following Israel’s intense bombardment of Lebanon, eventually leading to a ground invasion at the start of October.

Around 300,000 people have had to flee to Syria.
