Canada announces funding for Indo-Pacific development

During a recent visit to Bangladesh and Indonesia, Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, announced $56.8 million in additional funding for development and humanitarian assistance in the two Asian countries. 

The announcement aligns with Ottawa’s Indo-Pacific strategy, where Canada aims to increase its presence. The funding also promotes the country’s Feminist International Assistance Policy in the region, prioritizing interventions that include gender uplift.

Canada has been active in Bangladesh following the Rohingya refugee crisis. Between 2018 and 2024, Ottawa gave close to $600 million in humanitarian aid for millions of Rohingya refugees hosted by Bangladesh. 

Promoting civil society relations via development work is part of Canada’s policy in Indonesia.
