Canada sending nearly $40M to Caribbean
Ottawa has announced more than $38 million in funding to Caribbean nations for development initiatives.
Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, announced the decision at the 48th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community.
The package includes an additional $2 million on top of the initial $1.2 million package in response to Hurricane Beryl.
The funds are meant to promote gender equality, combat climate change, develop infrastructure, and provide regional humanitarian assistance.
Canada considers the Caribbean a significant international partner. Over the past 15 years, Canada has contributed nearly $3 billion in development funding and more than $400 million in assistance to Haiti in response to various natural and political troubles.
The Caribbean countries enjoy duty-free access to Canadian markets for many products.
