Canada announces $1 million for WHO to help combat mpox worldwide
The Canadian government says it will provide an additional $1 million to the World Health Organization to support its response to the mpox outbreak in Africa.
Canada has already contributed $2 million to WHO’s Contingency Fund for Emergencies dealing with the outbreak.
The announcement comes on the heels of WHO’s declaration that the upsurge in mpox cases constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
Canadian funding will go towards mechanisms for early disease detection, laboratory capacity, research, and community engagement.
Canada also continues to coordinate with organizations like Gavi and Vaccine Alliance to work on more solutions to the outbreak.
