Alberta social innovation hub abruptly loses funding

Flourish Alberta, an organization supporting social innovation and social impact technology in that province, has announced a significant loss of funding.

A statement on the organization’s website describes the funding loss as “unexpected news” caused by a “sudden shift in the funder’s strategic priorities, leading to the withdrawal of previously committed resources.”

As a result, most of Flourish Alberta’s programming is on hold. The statement says it’s too soon to know what this loss of funding will mean for the organization’s longevity.

Flourish Alberta formed in 2024 as an amalgamation of Alberta Social Enterprise Ecosystem Development (AB Seed), Alberta Social Innovation Connect (ABSI Connect) and the Centre for Social Impact Technology

The organization employs four people, with one dedicated to developing a network for Indigenous social entrepreneurs

The organization also runs four “steward groups” dedicated to particular areas of social entrepreneurship, covering technology strategy, sustainability and finance strategy.
