Anonymous multi-million dollar private donation to fund B.C.’s largest comprehensive youth wellness centre

British Columbia’s most comprehensive youth wellness centre is expected to open in downtown Vancouver, thanks to an anonymous donation of $13.8 million.

A four-storey building in the city’s Yaletown neighbourhood has been gifted to St. Paul’s Foundation for use by Foundry. Foundry is a provincewide network that provides free, confidential and integrated health and wellness services to young people between the ages of 12 and 24.

The 20,000 square-foot space was gifted by a private foundation and is expected to open later this year.

One in four young Canadians between 15 and 24 years old are affected by mental health or substance use challenges, according to a Health Canada survey.

Toxic drug overdoses are the leading cause of death among youth between 10 and 19 in British Columbia.

St. Paul’s Foundation is aiming to raise $7 million over the next year towards a multimillion dollar renovation of the building. The B.C. government has already committed $1.5 million and the federal government is providing support through the Youth Mental Health Fund.
