Mila launches Indigenous AI Advisory Circle
Mila, Quebec’s AI research institute and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) say they’re convening an Indigenous AI Advisory Circle.
Among those part of the new advisory body are representatives from the First Nations Technology Council, the First Nations Information Governance Centre and Animikii Indigenous Technology.
Natiea Vinson, CEO of the First Nations Technology Council, is also on Canada’s national Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence.
Also in Mila’s purview is the Indigenous Pathfinders in AI program, a seven-week opportunity for First Nations, Metis and Inuit post-secondary students to embed Indigenous approaches into AI development.
As the federal government continues to refine its position on – and investment in – sovereign AI, First Nations and Indigenous communities have highlighted the ongoing need for Indigenous data sovereignty. The Chiefs of Ontario also highlighted the potential for AI to assist in language revitalization.
