52,000 parcels of public land available for housing development in British Columbia

Housing Assessment Resource Tools (HART) has identified more than 52,000 available parcels of public land across the province of British Columbia.

The BC Public Lands Map (BCPLM), launched on Jun. 30, brings together various sources of government data on available lands, which can then be filtered by jurisdiction, ownership, vacancy and utilization, and core infrastructure access, such as water, sewage, electricity and roads.

This information is crucial for non-market housing providers and developers, who need access to no-cost or low-cost land as a prerequisite for an application to Build Canada Homes, said Craig Jones, associate director of HART, during a launch event.

The BCPLM is one of several data-driven tools developed by the HART team.

Several B.C. non-profit housing providers were recently hit with sunk costs as the provincial government rescinded its Community Housing Fund.

Amid a slowing condominium market in the province, the federal and provincial governments also announced that they would buy vacant units and convert them into affordable housing.
