NGOs warn Gaza’s aid system collapsing

Twelve major international NGOs and their Canadian chapters are ringing alarm bells as Israel’s most recent three-month blockade of aid in Gaza has brought the strip’s aid system to the brink of collapse.

The NGOs called the situation “one of the worst humanitarian failures of our generation” and warned that “survival itself is now slipping out of reach.”

About 95 per cent of aid organizations have had to suspend or limit their operations since Israel broke the ceasefire agreement in mid-March. The risk of famine is not only real, they said, but is likely unfolding in Gaza as thousands of pallets of aid remain stuck outside due to Israel’s refusal to let them enter.

The NGOs note that Israel has killed more than 400 aid workers and 1,300 medical staff in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023. This includes the most recent deaths of 13 paramedics who were killed in an execution-style by the Israeli army, and their bodies and vehicles were buried under sand.

The NGOs called Israeli actions in Gaza unacceptable and demanded that humanitarian organizations be allowed to do their jobs.
