Quebec group unveils 4 biodiversity wellness indicators

A group of 15 organizations from Quebec unveiled its 4th edition of its Wellness Indicators on Tuesday, designed to complement GDP, measuring the social, environmental, and economic dimensions on which the wellbeing and resilience of Quebecers depend.

The 2025 edition from G15+ includes four new indicators related to biodiversity:  proportion of protected areas, population trends for precarious species, the state of invasive alien species, and the state of knowledge on biodiversity.

All four indicators contribute to achieving the global targets set for 2030 and beyond, aiming to safeguard and sustainably use biodiversity.

Invasive alien species enter territories through many channels, including the purchase of exotic plants and the movement of firewood. These products could harbour invasive insects or fungi, contaminating the local ecosystem.

Citizens’ knowledge of biodiversity is as critical as government initiatives for biodiversity protection, the group said.
