New $484 million natural capital fund launched for Canada, Europe

Two years after announcing a partnership, Netherlands-based financial giant Triodos and Quebec workers fund Fondaction have launched a nearly half-billion-dollar fund to help transition farmland and forests to more restorative practices.

Called the Value Nature Fund 1, the $484 million fund will help transition vast tracts of land for sustainable food and lumber production.

The group includes Nuveen Natural Capital, SLM Partners and Climate Asset Management, and the UK Nature Impact Fund.

Value Nature Fund 1’s appeal is its dual-sector (agriculture and forestry) and dual-continent approach, say the group.

Investors’ risk is reduced because returns are driven by multiple, uncorrelated factors, such as different cropping and forest management systems, consumer markets, climates, and regulatory environments.
