What You Missed at the 2019 Philanthropic Foundations Canada Symposium

The future of philanthropy is working across boundaries

Why It Matters

To solve global and local challenges, there’s a fast-growing need for philanthropic foundations to collaborate with other sectors. We partnered with Philanthropic Foundations Canada to explore the benefits, risks, and opportunities for cross-sector collaboration.

Communities, governments, and businesses are all facing critical issues, from food insecurity to energy transition. What is the role of philanthropic foundations when it comes to pushing shared goals? How can we make cross-sector collaboration work — and what do we hope to achieve?

In October 2019, Future of Good partnered with Philanthropic Foundations Canada to be on-site at the 2019 Philanthropic Foundations Canada Symposium, translating key insights into compelling content that matters to the world of impact.

Our writer Jack Graham crafted two stories in the run-up to the Symposium, one exploring the benefits of cross-sector collaboration to advance shared goals, and the other why cross-sector collaboration keeps going wrong, looking at everything from fragile trust to logistical issues.

During Day 1, we heard from experts on Canada’s energy transition, and the potential tensions this can surface across different regions. Day 2 saw a deep-dive into the strengthening the cross-sector collaboration muscle of philanthropic foundations.

See our key insights below.
