Statistics Canada: Poverty rates hold steady despite rising inflation

The number of Canadians who were living in poverty remained unchanged in 2024, according to new data from Statistics Canada.

The information suggests that despite economic pressures from inflation, the number of impoverished Canadians did not decline.

StatsCan used tax data to find that Canada’s official poverty rate remained at 10.9 per cent, similar to 2023.

The Consumer Price Index found Canada’s inflation rate grew an average of 2.9 per cent in 2024.

Many Canadians say rising prices have made it harder to cover the cost of housing and food.

The StatsCan findings are early estimates and the full data is expected to be released in 2026.
