Diane Berard

At Future of Good, social finance and impact investing are an important part of our social impact journalism. Over the last four years of Future of Good’s coverage, we have featured stories of and insights from people and projects whose bold ambitions and brave journeys are shaping a more purpose-oriented finance, investing and funding ecosystem, and inspiring novel finance tools that accelerate more sustainable and inclusive communities for all. As examples, we covered the launches of Equality Fund, Desjardins Community Recovery Fund, TELUS Pollinator Fund for Good and Emergency Community Support Fund; in addition to our regular social finance coverage, we published special reports on the development of Canada’s Social Finance Fund and on the future of social purpose real estate; we chronicled the 10-year history of Canada’s Social Finance Forum; throughout the pandemic and during federal budgets, we kept policymakers informed of views from social finance leaders, and; we profiled groundbreaking initiatives such as: The Right Relations Collaborative, National Social Value Fund, Raven Indigenous Capital, Impact United, and Catalyst: Community Finance Initiative.

This journalism fellowship will allow Future of Good to bring dedicated news, insights and analysis to this important topic – especially at a time when the Government of Canada has launched the Social Finance Fund and Canadians are wondering about the potential opportunity for social finance to solve complex problems. This journalism fellowship focuses on solutions journalism which is a key aspect of the editorial strategy at Future of Good.

Diane Bérard has already been instrumental in our team’s coverage of social finance in Quebec, starting with a story on how social finance is being utilized by community organizations. We particularly look forward to bringing Quebec stories and experiences to English-speaking Canada.

Future of Good has also taken on the Social Finance Forum in partnership with SVX. The reimagined Social Finance Forum experience has already been uplifted by this additional coverage and Future of Good’s ability to cover these issues in depth will allow greater depth of learning and engagement around these important topics.

“We have been exploring social finance since 2019 to amplify its impact and support the environment for growth in Canada’s social finance system,” shares Dani DeBoice, Suncor Community Investment and the Suncor Energy Foundation. “We are excited to support Future of Good in covering this topic to help us, and others in Canada, understand how to effectively pursue impact investing.”

“I’m thrilled for Diane to join the growing reporting team at Future of Good. Social finance and impact investing seldom gets dedicated coverage, and given the transformations in the finance world, its essential to publish insights and analysis on news, trends, developments and solutions so that social purpose organizations can harness the potential of social finance, from gender-lens investing to Indigenous finance for their missions”, says Vinod Rajasekaran, Publisher & CEO.
