Build Canada Homes framework includes investment in non-profit housing, use of public lands

Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Canada has released a new investment policy that will guide the federal government’s investment in affordable housing.

On Nov.22, National Housing Day, the federal government announced that it will prioritize projects ready to begin construction within 12 months, focusing on local affordability, innovative construction methods, and the use of Canadian materials.

Build Canada Homes – the federal agency launched to increase affordable housing across the country – will be looking to invest in private developers, non-profits and community housing providers, and Indigenous organizations.

The agency has also said that it will be “leveraging public lands” to support its goal.

In Budget 2025, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation estimated that the country needs to double the pace at which it builds new homes.
