Canada to spend $84M for Syrian aid
Global Affairs Canada has committed $84 million in new funding to assist aid and humanitarian efforts in Syria as the country emerges out of the long shadow of civil war, which left it in ruins, poverty and displacement.
Canada will also ease sanctions against Syria to help the new government transition to political and economic stability.
Canada’s decision is in sync with recent measures taken by Western and Arab states to support a post-Assad Syria by relaxing restrictions placed on it after the start of the civil war 14 years ago.
Canada has been consistent in providing aid to the Syrian population. This year, it has provided $100 million in aid, bringing the total amount to more than $4.7 billion since 2016.
Canada has welcomed more than 100,000 Syrian refugees in the last 10 years.
