Canada’s largest trauma centre launches massive $1 billion fundraising campaign
As demand grows, Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation says they want to ensure the hospital can meet it.
Why It Matters
Critical care demand has grown more than 80 per cent over the last decade and is projected to grow another 40 per cent over the next 10 years. To meet that growing need, Sunnybrook is looking to invest in advanced medical technology, research and top clinical talent.

Sunnybrook Foundation has announced an ambitious fundraising goal of raising $1 billion to meet the growing demand for patient care.
It is the largest fundraising campaign in the Toronto hospital’s history, with more than $500 million already raised.
The money will support four priorities at Sunnybrook, including investments in medical leadership, advanced technology, research, and infrastructure.
A significant portion of the funding will support plans for a new critical care centre at its Bayview Campus, as demand has grown more than 80 per cent over the last decade and is projected to grow another 40 per cent over the next 10 years.
Sunnybrook is Canada’s largest trauma centre, caring for more than 1.1 million patients each year.
The hospital provides specialized treatment for patients with complex conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological and psychiatric disorders, traumatic injuries and high-risk pregnancies and sick newborns.
It’s also home to a nationally recognized program serving Canadian war veterans.
Nearly half of Sunnybrook’s facilities date back to 1946.
The push to expand critical care capacity comes as healthcare systems across Canada face growing pressure from an aging population and rising demand for services.
Canada has fewer than 2.5 hospital beds per 1,000 people, and many hospitals regularly operate near capacity, according to the Canadian Medical Association
