First of its kind philanthropy chair announced by Carleton University

Carleton University has announced the creation of Canada’s first chair in philanthropy, to be housed within its School of Public Policy and Administration in the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs.

The position aims to strengthen the non-profit sector and build on the university’s successful Master of Philanthropy and Non-profit Leadership program, according to university officials.

This chair, funded by a collaborative group of donors from across the country, will spearhead research, training, and knowledge mobilization and is expected to launch in 2026.

Canada is home to more than 170,000 non-profit and charitable organizations, 86,000 of which are registered with the Canada Revenue Agency

Inflation, new financing models, regulatory changes, new technologies, and rising demand for services in the face of economic uncertainty pose escalating challenges for the non-profit sector in Canada.

The chair will help navigate those challenges at a pivotal time, said those involved in its creation, describing it as a key building block in a plan to establish a “world-class” Centre for Philanthropy and Civil Society at the university.
