Gender equality stagnates, declines, globally: Equal Measures 2030 report

Nearly 40 per cent of countries examined in a new report have seen gender equality stagnate or decline in recent years.

Equal Measures 2030, a global development agency based in the U.S., examined progress on the United Nations’ fifth Sustainable Development Goal and found little, if any, advancement had been made in any area.

Not one country is on track to achieve gender equality by 2030, the goal’s stated target, and only a single nation landed in the report’s “very good” category: Switzerland.

Canada was indexed as “good,” and the United States came in as “fair.”

According to Femicide in Canada, 122 women have already been killed by violence in Canada this year. Last year, the City of Toronto declared intimate partner violence an epidemic.

About 1.5 million women currently live in poverty in Canada, and men continue to be paid more than women. In some sectors, like technology, new research shows that the pay disparity between men and women is actually increasing.

The current federal government has repeatedly promised to prioritize gender equity both domestically and internationally.
