IB: The 2025-2026 Report on the Charities Program numbers are now out

The Canada Revenue Agency’s Charities Directorate has issued its most recent look at charity activity in Canada.

The Report on the Charities Program 2025-2026 shows some minor differences from the 2024–2025 report, but no dramatic shifts.

According to the directorate, there are 85,348 registered charities in operation, including 73,563 charitable organizations, 7,132 private foundations and 4,653 public foundations.

Assets totalled $804 billion, with charitable organizations accounting for $611 billion, private foundations holding $132 and public foundations responsible for $61 billion.

The three classes of organizations took in $442 billion in revenue against expenditures of $409 billion. That’s up slightly from the 2024–2025 figures, which reported $703 billion in assets, $393 billion in revenue and $354 billion in expenditures.

One minor difference from the previous year was the amount spent on activities outside of Canada. During the 2025–2026 fiscal year, that amount totalled $5.1 billion. In the 2024–2025 reporting period, that figure was $5.3 billion.

Last year, the CRA conducted 5,318 compliance activities: 5,091 non-audits and 227 audits. It also revoked charitable registration status 2,076 times.
