CRA removes personalized charitable purposes guidance, offers webinars to help instead

Throughout October, the Canada Revenue Agency will host webinars to teach organizations how to prepare charitable purposes documents, as the agency is no longer providing pre-approval or advance review of charitable purposes or activities.

Instead, the CRA has issued a short guide explaining how to write a charitable purposes document. It suggests that there are three approaches an organization can take, which it describes as copy, modify or create.

Copy is simply selecting one of the CRA-provided examples that best fits with the organization’s purpose and goals.

The modify option is to use a CRA model purpose statement about the general type of activity performed and adapt it to better reflect the mission’s specifics.

Charities can also create their own purpose statements from scratch, although the CRA suggests including details about the category and subcategory the charity belongs to, the scope of its activities and the eligible beneficiary group.

There is a sign-up and information page for the upcoming webinars. There will be both French and English sessions on Oct. 6 and 16, with additional English-only sessions happening on Oct. 7 and 15.
