Desjardins grants $225,000 to Quebec newspaper Le Devoir to fund a social economy beat
A Quebec newspaper will add a full-time journalist to its newsroom for three years to cover the social economy movement.
The Caisse d’économie solidaire, a member of the Mouvement Desjardins, will give Le Devoir $225,000 over three years to raise public understanding of how the social economy affects everyday people in Quebec.
Le Devoir’s editor-in-chief, Bryan Miles, stressed that the newsroom will retain full editorial freedom over the coverage.
Quebec has 11,360 social economy enterprises. They generate $53.6 billion in revenue and employ 248,000 Quebecers.
Although the social economy is a Quebec trademark, it rarely makes headlines. Many citizens deal with social enterprises regularly without realizing it, and the economic model and its impact on communities remain underrecognized.
The Caisse d’économie solidaire has $1.6 billion in loans to Quebec cooperatives and non-profits. A cooperative itself, it has 22,000 members and $2.5 billion in assets.
