Amid budget reductions, WAGE announces funding for nearly 400 community organizations

Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) this week announced its largest funding round to date by number of organizations supported.

Nearly 400 organizations across Canada will receive funding totalling $77.5 million, which will support women’s participation work, combat gender-based violence, and strengthen the 2SLGBTQI+ community sector.

WAGE was one of the federal departments facing a dramatic funding cut of 80 per cent when the Carney government set out on a public sector spending review. The Women’s Program distributed $226.3 million in the 2022-23 fiscal year, dropping to $88.1 million the following year.

Analysis by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives shows a drop in funding across the Women’s Program, the Sex, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression program, and the gender-based violence program.

The analysis shows that WAGE’s total expenditures are still set to decline from 2027-28 onwards, and that there will be some reduction in full-time staff equivalents.
