B.C. community to receive tiny home village
A new tiny home village is planned for New Westminster, B.C. that will open later this year near the city’s rapid transit system.
The village will have 30 temporary modular homes with central laundry and kitchen facilities along with social services and 24/7 supports.
The project is funded through BC Housing’s HEART and HEARTH program that addresses homelessness, especially encampments.
The program has two parts: HEART (Homeless Encampment Action Response Teams) coordinates outreach services to support people living outdoors, while HEARTH funds the creation of temporary housing and shelter spaces to help move people indoors.
The programs bring governments and local partners together to provide coordinated support.
Temporary housing with supports provides safe and stable housing for adults who are at risk of experiencing homelessness, including those with disabilities, according to BC Housing.
New Westminster had 217 unhoused people accounted for in the 2025 Point in Time survey, a seven per cent increase since 2005.
