Canadian-built water treatment plant destroyed by Israeli army in Gaza
Reuters news agency reports that more than 30 water wells in Gaza, including a water treatment facility built by the Canadian Government, were destroyed by the Israeli army last month.
Video posted to social media by an Israeli combat engineer shows the destruction of “Canada Well” in Rafah’s Tel Sultan neighbourhood in late July.
The Haaretz newspaper has confirmed the video’s authenticity and reports the solider who filmed it described the act as being “in honour of Shabat.”
International law prohibits the destruction of objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population.
In an interview with CBC News, Canada’s International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen said his government is “assessing the damage” and has expressed “concern.”
Israel’s military has killed more than 39,000 Palestinians in Gaza in the last ten months, and during the same time frame, Canada has pledged more than $165 million in aid to Palestinians.
