Rabobank launches foundation designed to give away all its money

Dutch financial institution Rabobank now operates two philanthropic arms: the long‑standing Rabo Foundation and the newly created Rabo Impact Foundation.

Established in 1974, the original Rabo Foundation functions as a traditional grantmaker, providing small loans and donations to smallholder farmers internationally and to people in the Netherlands who face barriers to the labour market.

The new Rabo Impact Foundation will take a different approach. It plans to deploy 100 per cent of its $161 million endowment—rather than the typical five per cent annual disbursement—through higher‑risk investments aimed at systemic change. Its focus areas include energy and food system transitions, circularity, water, health care and affordable housing.

Impact loans will start at $3.1 million for large‑scale projects and new sustainable concepts, while equity investments in impact ventures will begin at $1.5 million.
