Ottawa to help build 1,100 rental units through Build Canada Homes
Eight non-profit affordable housing projects in Ottawa, covering 1,100 new rental homes, have been approved under Build Canada Homes.
Part of a partnership between the federal government and the City of Ottawa, which promises 3,000 new affordable homes in the city, most of these new projects should begin construction before the end of the year.
Of the eight projects listed, six are entirely non-profit, and two are partnerships between non-profits and the private sector.
Launched in September 2025, Build Canada Homes is a new federal agency focused on developing affordable housing with private and non-market actors.
So far, the agency’s commitments have included 500 non-profit and community housing units in Nova Scotia, and an investment in Dunn House Phase 2, a University Health Network supportive housing project in Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood.
A review of Bill C-20, which will seek to establish Build Canada Homes as a federal Crown corporation, is currently underway in the House of Commons. Members of the public were invited to submit written briefs by Apr. 17, 2026.
