Sharlene has been reporting on responsible business, environmental sustainability and technology in the UK and Canada since 2018. She has worked with various organizations during this time, including the Stanford Social Innovation Review, the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business at Lancaster University, AIGA Eye on Design, Social Enterprise UK and Nature is a Human Right. Sharlene moved to Toronto in early 2023 to join the Future of Good team, where she has been reporting at the intersections of technology, data and social purpose work. New research into the impact of the disbursement quota changes has found that 1,190 foundations, primarily private, were affected. According to Imagine Canada’s principal researcher David Lasby, these foundations would previously have been “disbursing below the levels required by the new quota.”
Between Apr. 1 and Sep. 30, 2026, unregistered organizations, non-profits and consultant lobbyists will be supported by an educational campaign to increase awareness of requirements under British Columbia’s Lobbyists Transparency Act.
A new affinity group hosted by Philanthropic Foundations of Canada (PFC) will bring together foundations with deep expertise in funding housing, as well as those that might be new to the space.
The Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP) is set to launch in July 2026, and will place people with disabilities in two groups: those who are and are not able to work. The cities of Edmonton and Lethbridge, among other municipalities, have tabled motions urging the provincial government to reconsider this program.
